Player Characters

Burroughs - Brainer

  • Been living in Little Rock a few years after travelling in from the west where he burnt a few bridges.
  • Only recently met Big Dog, has kept a low profile.
  • Lives in a rundown coastal mansion to the north of Little Rock, in the ruins. Stray children seem to hang around, watching his place.

The Drifter ('Rex') - Gunlugger

  • Been in Little Rock a year, arrived during battle between Big Dog and marauders from the west.
  • Has a teenage son called Twice, a biker who left his gang (Skulkickers) and is heading west to join the Dustman
  • Makes his living as an enforcer, otherwise stealing what he needs

Specialist Hobbs - Quarantine

  • Woke up from Stasis a few days ago
  • Is remembering things, now knows how to locate his wife's Stasis facility, Gamma.

Known Facts about the World

  • Area used to be called the 'Central European Federation'
  • World ended 47 years and 7 months ago, destroyed by satellite-launched bioweapons that got out of control.
  • Settlement called Little Rock (formerly Bluestone) run by Big Dog, local boss.
  • Makes most of its money from a nearby refinery, with its successful market supplementing
  • Big Dog has a compound (+1 Armour defend) and medium gang.
  • Refinery is starting to unionise but the key to keeping it running is White, the local tech. Without him it will quickly break down
  • Regional warlord the Duke has sent Roark and a small, extremely well-armed gang to provide 'protection' to the refinery in addition to Big Dog, at the refinery's request. Refinery union thinks it's cleaver, trying to play both off to get some independence from both. Dangerous.
  • Underway, looked after by the Last Boy. Rubble has choked areas of the city off, leaving largely unlooted streets, metro system etc. inhabited by cannibal gangs, stray dogs and runaway children under the Last Boy's protection. He has restored power to parts of the Underway, trying to recreate pre-collapse streets with mannequins, recorded music, etc.
  • Bridgetown, satellite of Little Rock and guarding the approach. Situated on a damaged motorway flyover.
  • Petrified forest, occupied by some strange creature and seems to be spreading. Connected to the maelstrom.
  • Stasis: Control Omega, where Hobbs woke from (has CCTV, tyre spikes, garage and PA, access currently to medbay only; Gamma, large civilian stasis in St Michael, where Hobbs wife was and town he used to live in; Kappa, abandoned and in the Underway controlled by the Last Boy.
  • Hall of Mirrors (Underway): if you open your brain here, you access the other side of the maelstrom direclty, but it's painful and ultimately damaging.

Non-Player Characters

Specialist Anderson, Michael P: Trusted by Hobbs, enlisted together. Currently in Stasis.

Balls: Overmuscled bald member of Big Dog's gang, hates the Drifter wants to take him out and be known as the toughest warrior in town.

Bar: Refinery thug, killed in cold blood by the Drifter in session 1 (shot by sniper at Stasis Control Omega).

Big Dog: Tough cigar smoking woman in charge of Little Rock. Has a thing for the Drifter, has done a deal with Burroughs to put puppet strings in White so that if she needs his loyalty, White is her pawn. Burroughs is yet to complete his end of this. Wants Roark gone from the Refinery, her resources and borders secure.

Daff: Refinery union leader, but burdened by the weight of the responsibility. Thinks he's cleverer than everyone else, shortish with dark, messy hair and has puppet strings in his head from Burroughs. Currently at Stasis Control Omega.

The Dustman: a myth, personification of death, leader of the most kick- ass gang around depending who you ask. Out west currently. Wants?

Specialist Tammy Jackson: Initially unhinged by coming out of Stasis, but thanks to Burroughs, now a conduit for raw maelstrom to emit from, grow. Currently sedated in Stasis Control Omega and identified as a Protocol V threat by Orbital 6.

Jackabakka: Mentally handicapped and disfigured boy Drifter has taken a shine to. Part of the Last Boy's folllowers.

Joe's Girl: an engima, seeking a meaning, any meaning, in her existence. Close acquaintance of the Last Boy, White and Burroughs, Short (5'2") and frail.

Kettle (M): Married to Princey, promised to keep quiet and let go by the PCs. Currently at the Refinery, keeping a low profile. Might return to Stasis Control Omega with their kids (Jute and Cally) if things are bad at the Refinery. Burroughs has Hold 4 on Kettle to keep quiet about the Stasis facility, etc.

The Last Boy: a Grotesque seeking dependence of others, their adoration. In his 50s, he was a child during the collapse. Wears pancake makeup to try and look young, affects a young, childlike persona and rake-thin. Controls the restored areas of the Underway, working on creating a haven for people, a place that recreates pre-collapse society. Intensely interested in the PCs and seeks to win them over to his cause, to bring back the old days via what's on the other side of the maelstrom.

Orbital 6: Satellite loaded with weapons recontacting Stasis facilities. Seeks to neutralise Protocol V (the maelstrom and those affected by it) using Protocol D (a 'cure' that either blocks access to the maelstrom or kills the target painfully). This is it's programming, to neutralise threats to allow the Stasis dwellers to reoccupy the surface.

Parcher: St Michael hardholder who lost a recent conflict with Big Dog thanks to Drifter's intervention.

Princey (F): Married to Kettle, promised to keep quiet and let go by the PCs. Currently at the Refinery, keeping a low profile. Might return to Stasis Control Omega with their kids (Jute and Cally) if things are bad at the Refinery. Took 1 Harm from failed Burrough's attempt to plant puppet strings.

Roark: Leader of the Duke's men at the Refinery. Wants to use any excuse to secede control of the Refinery from Big Dog altogether. Pissed off at White's disappearance, believes Burroughs and the Drifter kidnapped him on Big Dog's orders so Burroughs could mess with White's brain.

Roslyn: Hobb's wife, last seen at Stasis Gamma

Shazza: A prostitute working out of the Refinery, has history with the Drifter and currently at Stasis Control Omega. Seeking hope, a new life.

Specialist Shepphard, John R: In stasis currently, bad blood with Hobbs after Hobbs reported supplies missing following Shepphard's watch

Chief Technician Stephen M Spencer: In Stasis currently, leader of Omega. Has access codes for Orbital 6 and seeks activation of the plan to reclaim the surface, i.e. use of Protocol D on the populace.

Troll: Leader of a cannibal gang in the Underway, very dangerous.

Twice: Drifter's 15 year old son, an ex-bikie from the Skulkickers. Currently hiding out in the Underway trying to get fuel, food and ammo to head west and link up with the Dustman. Brought together with Drifter by the Last Boy. Wants respect.

White: timid genius, pulled and bullied around by everyone. Key to keeping the refinery running and practically the only person who knows any 'science'. Close with Joe's Girl, has a healing foot after Drifter shot it.

Session 1 Events

  • Discovery of Stasis Control Omega by Burroughs, White and Drifter using Joe's Girl's map.
  • Followed by unionites - Bar, Daff, Princey, Kettle and Shazza. Bar shot and killed, White shot in the foot (all by Drifter) and rest surrender.
  • Some brain manipulation, left as prisoners in Stasis' garage
  • Meet Hobbs, Jackson (sedated)
  • White's foot is treated

Session 2 Events

  • Talk to Jackson, she asks to be rescued from Hobbs before maelstrom accident.
  • Contact established with Orbital 6, which advises of Protocol V contamination and requests permission to launch Protocol D on the site.
  • Hobbs lacks appropriate access codes to get access to Orbital 6 classified info
  • Conversation with Orbital ended when brainer move goes wrong and Jackson becomes a battery/breeding ground for the maelstrom. Jackson sedated and confined to medbay.
  • Princey and Kettle let go after in-brain puppet strings, Daff and Shazza stay looking after Jackson.
  • White says thinks he can repair stasis but will need parts. Says thinks they can find them in the Underway.

Session 3 Events

  • Drifter covers the escape, then everyone exits into a powered street, recently swept, flowers in hanging baskets, etc. Recently maintained and cared for.

Session 5 Events (memory recalled)

  • Meet the Last Boy, recorded sounds of merriment, pre-collapse nightlife in the background. Introduces himself to them, emphasises how much he knows about them and wants to help them along. Knows Joe's Girl well (She might be there too? Can't remember, seems likely)
  • Drifter and Twice meet, link up. Twice remains unaware Drifter is his father.
  • Hobbs and co discover Stasis Kappa and learn it was abandoned and they travelled to Stasis Gamma in St Michael. Has been physically transplanted by the Last Boy's people and serves as their source of power and equipment to create his area of electrically-powered Underway. Contains parts White needs to repair Stasis Control Omega's stasis systems.
  • Burroughs rests in area for extended period, using medical facilities at Kappa. Healing injuries from encounter with Cannibals, needs rest/no movement to heal.
  • Burroughs enters the Hall of Mirrors and communicates with a menacing bear-like creature seeking to convince him to assist it, associated with the Maelstrom and power for Burroughs. Link to the petrified forest hinted at.
  • [Was going to introduce the Dustman as a powerful force and have him appear as part of duststorm into the Last Boy's domain and make off with Twice - ran out of time, not sure about this anyway.]
